At Barcelona's international schools, lessons are taught in English, French, German or Italian. Spanish is usually one subject among many, with two or three hours a week, and it is often taught alongside students who speak it at home.
That is a difficult place to start for a child who arrived recently with no Spanish. Students can spend two years at an international school, become fluent in the language of the school, and still find it hard to use Spanish outside it. Teenagers who arrive at fourteen or fifteen have the least time to catch up.
These classes are for those students. Small groups, organised by age and level, with a clear syllabus, qualified teachers and regular feedback.
The timetable is built around the times Barcelona's international schools finish. Beginner groups run on Monday and Wednesday, continuing groups on Tuesday and Thursday. Your child can come one afternoon a week or both.

Classes run from Monday 5 October 2026 to Friday 19 June 2027, following the Barcelona school holiday calendar. Groups run with a minimum of six students.
Students are grouped by age first, then by level.
Spanish through games, projects and practical activities rather than textbooks. Children build vocabulary and confidence by using Spanish to talk, play, create and solve things together. Classes last 60 minutes, which is about as long as this age group can concentrate after a full day at school.
Structured classes with clear grammar teaching, conversation practice and optional preparation for the DELE exams. Classes last 90 minutes. This is also where students who have recently arrived with little or no Spanish start, in a group of others in the same position rather than a class of native speakers.
The first session of the week is the lesson. New language is introduced and practised. The second session is práctica: conversation, games, help with the Spanish homework their school has set, and exam work for students preparing for DELE.
This matters if your child only comes one afternoon a week. The second session consolidates rather than moves on, so they do not miss new material. If you add the second afternoon in January, they can join without catching up.
DELE is the official Spanish qualification from the Instituto Cervantes, issued by Spain's Ministry of Education and recognised internationally. Theescolares version is written for students aged 11 to 17, with topics and situations suited to that age rather than to adults.
Exams are held twice a year, in November and May. We include the preparation in the continuing groups and enter students when they are ready. The qualification does not expire, so it stays useful if your family moves on.

No. The beginner groups start from zero and most of our students join with little or no Spanish. Many of them arrived in Barcelona partway through a school year and were placed in a school where lessons are in another language. Your child will be in a small group of students in the same position, with a qualified Spanish teacher who specialises in teaching children.
By age and by level. There are two age groups, Niños (7 to 11) and Jóvenes (12 to 17). Within each, beginner groups run on Monday and Wednesday and continuing groups on Tuesday and Thursday. Every student takes a free placement test before the course starts so we can put them in the right group.
Yes. Students join throughout the year, and beginners in particular often arrive mid-term because the family has just moved. We place your child with the free placement test and start them in the group that fits. If you join partway through a month, you pay only for the classes left in that month, and the normal monthly fee starts the following month.

Yes. DELE para escolares is the official Instituto Cervantes qualification for students aged 11 to 17. It is recognised internationally and does not expire. Exams are held twice a year, in November and May. We include the preparation in the continuing groups and enter students when they are ready.
It takes about twenty minutes and it is free. A teacher has a short conversation with your child and sets a brief written task, so we can see which group suits them. There is no charge and no obligation to enrol. If we think one-to-one classes would suit your child better than a group, we will say so.
Let us know in advance and your child can usually join the equivalent group on the other track that week. We do not charge for a class your child cannot attend if you tell us 24 hours ahead.
