So you've decided to learn Spanish in Barcelona? Great choice! But before you pack your bags, I’m sure there's one very sensible question buzzing around your head: how much is this going to cost?
It's a fair thing to ask, and you deserve a straight answer rather than a vague "it depends". So let's break it down properly — course fees, the extras nobody warns you about, and a realistic monthly budget for the language student life in Barcelona.
One thing before we start: prices change all the time, so treat every figure here as a friendly ballpark rather than gospel. For the current, exact numbers, always check our live course dates and prices page.
The course itself is usually one of the largest costs. The good news is that Barcelona is genuinely good value compared to a lot of other European capitals. What you'll pay depends almost entirely on how intensively you want to study.
To give you a sense of scale, here's what we charge at Iberia Language Academy as a rough guide:
Intensive Spanish (20 hours a week, 4 hour classes Mon-Fri): around €360 for 2weeks—the fast track if you want to hit the ground running.
Semi-intensive Spanish (10 hours a week, 2 hour classes Mon-Fri): around €360 for 4 weeks—a good middle ground between intensive learning and a relaxed class.
Part-time Spanish (4 hours a week, 2 hour classes twice a week): around €360 for 10 weeks—easier on the mind and the wallet, spread over more weeks.
Those are approximate and can shift, so please don't quote us on them — pop over to our intensive Spanish course page or our part-time Spanish course page for the up-to-date figures.
Looking at Spanish class costs as a whole across the city, here's roughly what you'll find. These are general ranges for the type of course–not specific competitor prices–and they wobble by school, season and how many weeks you book. Often, classes are cheaper per week the longer you commit.
Intensive courses (around 20 hours a week): roughly €150–€300 per week, often cheaper per week the longer you commit.
Semi-intensive (around 10 hours a week): roughly €90–€140 per week.
Part-time / extensive (a few hours a week): roughly €30–€60 per week.
Private one-to-one lessons: roughly €20–€60 per hour—the priciest per hour, but fully tailored to you.
As a rule of thumb, group classes give you the most learning per euro, while private lessons buy speed and personal attention. Many students tend to mix the two.
Here's where a bit of honesty goes a long way. The course price on the website is rarely the only number, so it pays to know what else might land on your bill.
Enrolment / registration fee: most schools charge a one-off enrolment fee ranging from €30-€60 when you first sign up. It's usually modest and paid just once, but do check whether it's included in the price you've been quoted.
Course materials: textbooks and workbooks may cost extra, typically a one-off charge of around €20–€60. Some schools fold this into the registration fee; others don't.
Exam fees (if you're taking DELE): if you're aiming for an official DELE qualification — the internationally recognised Spanish certificate — you'll pay a separate exam fee to the Instituto Cervantes, generally in the region of €110–€230 depending on the level. That's paid to the exam body, not the school, and DELE prep courses are usually priced separately too.
Good news! Iberia Language Academy doesn't charge for enrolment or books. The full price is always the full price.
None of these are nasty surprises if you plan for them. The golden rule: always ask what's included before you pay, and here at Iberia Language Academy we will always be upfront with you about ours.
The course is only part of the adventure — you've also got to eat, sleep and get around. Luckily, Barcelona is noticeably cheaper than cities like London, while still giving you beaches, mountains and world-class tapas.
As a realistic guide, a language student can expect to spend somewhere between €800 and €1,500 a month, depending on your lifestyle and how central you want to live. Here's a simple breakdown:
Accommodation (a room in a shared flat): €450–€900 a month—the biggest single cost, and cheaper the further you drift from the tourist hotspots.
Groceries: €250–€400 a month—fresh, local produce at the markets keeps this cost down and while providing delicious food.
Transport: around €25 a month with a T-Usual ticket (unlimited trips within the city limits). Barcelona's metro is easy to use, and walking is highly encouraged.
Utilities (electricity, water, gas, internet): a total cost of €100–€160 a month, often split between flatmates.
Add a caña or two and the occasional menú del día (the great-value set lunch you'll quickly become obsessed with) and you've got a full, sociable month covered without breaking the bank. If accommodation is your big worry, we can lend a hand—take a look at our accommodation FAQ page, and for more money-saving ideas have a read of our post on learning Spanish in Barcelona on a budget.
Let's pull it all together. If you did, say, a four-week intensive course, you might be looking at a rough course cost plus a modest enrolment fee and materials, then your living costs on top for the month. For many students that lands somewhere in the region of €1,300–€2,200 for a busy month of intensive study and full-on Barcelona living—though a longer, part-time approach spreads the cost more gently.
Ultimately, learning Spanish here is a genuinely affordable adventure compared with most of Western Europe, especially when you factor in the lifestyle you get in return. Barcelona is not just a city to learn a new language; it's a place to live it.
Why not consider ILA as your chosen place to learn Spanish?
