Summer will soon be here and it’s the perfect season for an adventure.
If you’re looking for some inspo beyond the simple pleasures like sunbathing or going on holiday, then learning Spanish in another country is a plan that fits the summer perfectly - combining travel, personal growth, new friends, and immersion in a new culture. A refreshing mix.
Let’s look at a few of the reasons why summer is the perfect season to learn Spanish, with a focus on our home city of Barcelona.
Spain is the sunniest country in Europe where the sun shines more than 300 days per year on average. It’s a far cry from the grim, grey skies in some northern European countries like the UK, Ireland or the Netherlands.
And the sunniest time of year is, of course, summer, where students receive guaranteed sun on most days. A non-sunny day is actually peculiar. However, remember there’s a bit of temperature variation within Spain. The further north you go, the lower the summer temperatures are, which can get a little too stifling in the south - especially in inland cities like Murcia, Granada or Seville. On the other hand, the rugged Atlantic coast, where Galicia is, can be surprisingly unpredictable and often rainy.
Where we are, in Barcelona, the weather is lovely in the summer because there’s the refreshing influence of the Mediterranean and the city is far more northerly than most people realise, sitting close to the border with France. There’s also the sea to jump into if it gets a bit too hot. That said, if you do suffer in higher temperatures then June and early July are a little fresher than late July or August.
While Barcelona is always cosmopolitan, it transforms into even more of a global hub during the summer. The sunny season brings an influx of students, expats, and travelers from every corner of the planet. You’ll hear a chattering chorus of known and unknown languages as you stroll around the Gothic quarter’s medieval streets or relax under the palm trees in the Ciutadella Park. It’s a vibrant, open-minded atmosphere where everyone is eager to connect.
For a Spanish student, this international energy is what gives the learning experience some special social sauce. Yes, you will learn from textbooks but the academic routine will be elevated by a network of friends from all over who share your passion for mastering the language. Practicing your conversational skills over a café con leche becomes a pleasure when your study buddies have so many stories to share, from places you’ve never been.
If there’s one thing Spain knows how to do in the summer, it’s throw a spectacular party - and Barcelona is absolutely no exception. The city comes alive with Festes Majors - vibrant, week-long neighborhood festivals that transform the streets into colorful, open-air celebrations.
The most famous is the Festa Major de Gràcia in mid August, where locals compete to decorate their streets with elaborate, handmade creations, accompanied by live music, dancing, and awe-inspiring human towers.
This boisterous cultural calendar acts as an immersion aid. Language thrives in context, and there is no better classroom than a bustling neighborhood plaza during a summer festival. Whether you are ordering a round of tapas, navigating your way to an outdoor concert, getting a little loose with the locals, or striking up a conversation at a beachfront chiringuito, every interaction grounds your Spanish in reality, making your learning experience more fun, memorable and conversational.

To end on a practical note, let’s not forget about timing. For university and high school students, the summer months offer a precious extended break from the rigors of the regular academic calendar. Instead of letting your brain hibernate, spending a few weeks or months in Barcelona allows the space to focus on an enriching new skill without the stress of impending exams or deadlines.
Beyond just filling your time productively, mastering Spanish gives you a competitive edge. Adding one of the most widely spoken global languages to your CV or university application makes you stand out, demonstrating independence, adaptability, and a worldly edge. Plus, an intensive summer language course in Barcelona can often translate into valuable academic credits back home, making it a wise move for your educational future.
