Barcelona
Barcelona is one of Spain’s most beautiful cities and definitely its most cosmopolitan.
This city actually has two official languages – Castellano, known as Castilian Spanish, and Catalan. Still, with an estimated 98% of people in Barcelona speaking Spanish, it’s a great place to learn the language.
Barcelona attracts the absolute best Spanish teaching talent from Spain and beyond. As such, the city is home to some of the best Spanish language academies in Spain, with many different courses to choose from. Aside from the educational experience, Barcelona’s incredible social scene, wonderful outdoor spaces and international community make it perhaps Spain’s best for learning Spanish.
Madrid
Madrid is home to an array of Cervantes Institute-accredited schools and specialised language academies. As Spain’s capital, it offers the quintessential Spanish big-city experience. What’s more, it’s very international, with a large expat population and a vibrant social scene.
However, it’s very expensive. In fact, it has surpassed Barcelona as the country’s most expensive city, with sources reporting Madrid’s property prices are reportedly rising at three times the rate of Barcelona’s.
Valencia
Valencia offers an ideal environment for learning Spanish. The Valencian accent is renowned for being somewhat ‘neutral’, making it easier to understand. Plus, the city is a fine blend of good language schools, excellent affordability and wonderful culture.
As the home of paella, the food is amazing, and the city is surrounded by La Huerta – a fertile green region that provides an abundance of fresh ingredients. There are amazing national parks to visit nearby and miles of golden beaches. As an alternative to Barcelona and Madrid, Valencia is an excellent city to learn Spanish.
Bilbao
The northern Spanish city of Bilbao, the capital of the Basque Country, is an excellent place to learn Spanish. It’s a non-touristy city that still has plenty of cosmopolitan culture. You’ll find great museums like the Guggenheim and plenty of fantastic restaurants and bars, with a particular focus on the city’s famous pintxos.
While Bilbao might not have the same high-quality Spanish schools as the likes of Barcelona or Madrid, there are a few good language academies in the city centre. Perhaps the most unique quality is the region’s mild climate, which makes it far more comfortable than other parts of the country during the summer.
Seville
It may not be as cosmopolitan as Barcelona or Madrid, but Seville is a city with a charm of its own. Andaluscía’s sun-soaked capital is an intoxicating blend of vibrant plazas, sublime architecture, centuries-old traditions and captivating culture.
From old-world tapas joints and intimate flamenco clubs to sprawling parks and breathtaking monuments, there’s so much to see and do in this magnificent city. And, while Barcelona and Madrid get most of the fanfare, many Spanish people argue that Seville is the quintessential Spanish city.

La Coruña
The main city in the northwestern region of Galicia, La Coruña offers a wonderful alternative to Spain’s big cities. An often overlooked city, it’s less touristy and more affordable than its rivals. And with fewer English speakers, you have a good chance of immersing yourself in the language and accelerating your learning.
La Coruña’s Atlantic coast setting makes it a culinary paradise. Galicia is renowned for having the best seafood in Spain and, as its biggest city, La Coruña features an array of first-rate seafood restaurants. You’ll also find one of Europe’s largest promenades along its seafront, as well as the world’s oldest functioning lighthouse.
Granada
One of Andalusia’s best cities, Granada offers a great opportunity to learn and improve Spanish speaking skills. The city is home to several high-quality, accredited Spanish language schools. It’s also more affordable than many Spanish cities, making it ideal for long-term immersion, and offers a rich cultural experience, including the stunning Alhambra palace, considered by many to be Spain’s most beautiful monument.
Granada has a lower level of English compared to many Spanish cities. This means you’ll be forced to use your language skills more. Plus, as a vibrant university city, Granada offers excellent opportunities for language exchanges.
